What to Expect
Ultrasound examination requires no special preparation. A small amount of hypoallergenic gel is applied to the area being examined, and Dr. Golan moves a handheld probe (transducer) over the skin surface. The examination is painless and takes 10-20 minutes depending on the area being assessed. You can see the images on the monitor in real time as Dr. Golan explains findings. When ultrasound is used to guide an injection, the needle tip is visualized throughout placement, confirming precise delivery into the target structure. This is especially valuable for Morton's neuroma injections, peroneal tendon injections, and plantar fascia releases.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does ultrasound compare to MRI for soft tissue?
MRI provides excellent resolution and a global view of all structures, but requires scheduling at an external facility, is expensive, and takes 30-60 minutes. Ultrasound is performed in-office, immediate, and is superior for dynamic assessment and injection guidance. For complex cases, both may be used.
Is ultrasound safe?
Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound is entirely safe, painless, and radiation-free. It is one of the safest imaging modalities available and can be repeated as often as needed without concern.
Can ultrasound detect a Morton's neuroma?
Yes - ultrasound is highly accurate for detecting and sizing Morton's neuromas, and is an excellent guide for injections directly into the neuroma, improving treatment precision significantly.
