Laser treatment of a plantar wart. Treatment and recovery vary by patient. This is not a before-and-after treatment comparison.

Key Takeaways

  • REMY's 980 nm laser is indicated for soft-tissue procedures that include plantar wart ablation.
  • Ablation targets wart tissue with controlled laser energy; it is different from non-ablative laser therapy for pain.
  • Potential benefits include precise local treatment and another option for selected stubborn or painful warts.
  • Numbing, wound care, activity restrictions, and session count depend on the technique and your individual situation.
  • Laser treatment does not guarantee clearance, prevent every recurrence, or replace proper diagnosis and follow-up.

A plantar wart can make every step uncomfortable, especially when it sits under the heel or ball of the foot. If a wart is painful, persistent, or has not responded to other treatments, laser ablation with the REMY Class IV laser may be an option to discuss with Dr. Guy Golan at Vertex Podiatry in Grandview Heights, serving Columbus and surrounding communities.

First, make sure it is actually a plantar wart

Plantar warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infecting the skin on the sole. They can have a rough or callused surface and tiny dark dots, but corns, calluses, and other skin lesions can look similar. A photograph is not enough to establish the diagnosis. An exam helps determine what the spot is and whether laser treatment is appropriate. An unusual, changing, or bleeding lesion may need additional evaluation rather than immediate destruction.

What is REMY laser ablation?

Ablation means removing or destroying targeted tissue. The REMY manufacturer's labeling lists its 980 nm laser for podiatric soft-tissue procedures, including ablation, vaporization, and coagulation involving plantar warts. In an ablative procedure, controlled laser energy is used to treat the wart tissue. Coagulation may also help control small blood vessels in the treatment area.

This is different from a non-ablative laser session used for pain or inflammation. The device name alone does not tell you which technique is being used. Ask whether your treatment will remove tissue, whether it will leave a wound, and what that means for recovery. Class IV describes the laser's safety classification, not the severity of your wart or a guarantee of results.

Potential benefits for the right patient

  • Focused local treatment: The clinician can direct the laser at the treatment site rather than treating a broad area of the foot.
  • An option for stubborn lesions: Selected warts that remain painful or persist after other treatments may be considered for laser treatment.
  • An office-based approach: Treatment can often be performed in the office, with an individualized comfort and aftercare plan.
  • A goal of more comfortable walking: If the wart clears and the treatment site heals, pressure-related discomfort may improve.

These are potential advantages, not promises that REMY is superior to every other treatment. Observation, salicylic acid, freezing, and other clinician-directed treatments may be appropriate alternatives. Some warts resolve on their own. The best choice depends on pain, location, previous treatments, health conditions, and your preferences.

What to expect before and during your visit

  1. Evaluation: Dr. Golan examines the lesion and reviews prior treatments, medications, circulation, sensation, and relevant medical history.
  2. A clear plan: You discuss treatment alternatives, expected discomfort, wound care, potential costs, and whether more than one session may be needed.
  3. Comfort and preparation: Overlying thick skin may be reduced when appropriate. Protective eyewear and appropriate laser safety measures are used. Local anesthetic may be recommended depending on the ablative technique and your comfort needs.
  4. Targeted treatment: The laser is applied to the selected tissue. The time involved depends on the size, number, and location of the lesions.
  5. Aftercare: If there is an open treatment site, you receive dressing and pressure-relief instructions, along with a follow-up plan.

Do not assume the procedure will be painless or that numbing is never needed. Ask what sensation to expect and tell the clinician if you are uncomfortable.

Healing, walking, and returning to activity

Ablation may leave a tender area or wound. Healing time varies with the extent of treatment, the pressure placed on that part of the foot, and your health. A weight-bearing wound can take weeks to heal; there is no single recovery timeline that applies to everyone.

  • Follow the specific cleaning, dressing, and pressure-relief instructions you receive.
  • Ask about suitable shoes, standing at work, driving, exercise, and whether protective padding or offloading is needed.
  • Do not pick at the site or apply wart acids to healing skin unless your clinician specifically directs you to do so.
  • Avoid swimming or soaking an open wound until your clinician says it is safe.
  • Keep follow-up visits so healing and any remaining wart tissue can be assessed.

Contact the office promptly for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, worsening pain, or fever. If you have diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation, seek guidance early rather than trying to manage a new foot wound yourself.

Can the wart return, and will I need another treatment?

Yes. Warts can persist or recur after laser treatment, and new lesions can develop. More than one treatment or a different approach may be needed. Treating a visible wart does not guarantee that HPV is eliminated from nearby skin. Avoid picking warts, sharing foot-care tools, or walking barefoot in communal wet areas to reduce opportunities for spread.

Possible risks of ablative treatment include pain, burns, blistering, infection, skin-color changes, delayed healing, and scarring. A scar on a weight-bearing part of the sole can itself be uncomfortable. Discuss these tradeoffs before choosing treatment.

Is REMY wart ablation right for you?

If a painful spot is limiting your walking or you have a wart that keeps coming back, start with an evaluation. Dr. Golan can help you compare treatment options and build a plan that fits your foot, health, and daily activities. Confirm insurance coverage and any expected out-of-pocket costs before proceeding; coverage varies.

Sources and patient education

This article is educational and does not replace an examination or individualized medical advice. Treatment benefits, healing, and results vary.

Laser ablation is a tissue-treatment procedure, not simply a warming session. If it leaves a wound, recovery must account for pressure on the sole and your ability to heal. Diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation, or immune suppression require an individualized plan.
