Key Takeaways
- Your first appointment typically runs 45-60 minutes - longer than most specialist visits because we actually examine and explain
- Bring any previous imaging (X-rays, MRI) and a list of current medications
- We perform weight-bearing X-rays in-office on the same day when clinically indicated
- You'll leave with a clear diagnosis, a written treatment plan, and answers to your questions
- We accept most major insurance plans - contact us to verify your specific coverage before your visit
If you've never been to a podiatrist, you might not be sure what to expect. A podiatrist is a physician specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of foot, ankle, and lower leg conditions - and a first visit is very different from a quick urgent care stop or a rushed primary care appointment.
Here's exactly what your first appointment at Vertex Podiatry looks like.
Before You Arrive
What to bring:
- Your insurance card and photo ID
- Any previous imaging related to your foot or ankle (X-rays on a disc, MRI reports)
- A list of current medications and supplements
- The shoes you wear most regularly - we'll examine them
- Any previous treatment records if you've been seen elsewhere for this problem
What to wear: Comfortable, loose-fitting pants or shorts that can be rolled to the knee. We'll need access to your lower leg and foot.
Paperwork: New patient forms are available to complete online before your visit, saving time in the office. You'll receive a link when you schedule.
Check-In and Medical History
When you arrive, our front desk team will verify your insurance, collect any remaining paperwork, and escort you to an exam room. A medical assistant will document your vital signs, review your medications, and ask you to describe your primary concern in your own words.
Your description of when it started, how it's progressed, what makes it better or worse, and what you've already tried is the most valuable information in the visit. Take a moment before your appointment to think through the timeline of your problem - that history shapes the entire evaluation.
The Examination with Dr. Golan
Dr. Golan will enter, introduce himself, and spend time reviewing your history before any physical examination begins. The examination itself typically includes:
- Visual inspection - skin condition, nail health, deformity assessment, swelling, bruising
- Palpation - feeling specific structures to identify the source of pain (tendons, joints, bones, soft tissue)
- Range-of-motion testing - how well each joint moves and whether movement reproduces symptoms
- Vascular and neurological assessment - pulses, sensation testing, where clinically relevant
- Gait analysis - watching how you walk, which reveals biomechanical patterns that often explain the source of the problem
- Shoe examination - wear patterns on your shoes tell us a great deal about your mechanics
Imaging - Same Day When Indicated
Vertex Podiatry has digital X-ray equipment in-office. If Dr. Golan determines that imaging is needed to complete the evaluation - which it often is - we can take weight-bearing X-rays on the same day as your visit. There's no separate imaging appointment.
We also perform diagnostic ultrasound in-office for soft tissue evaluation (tendons, fascia, ligaments). If an MRI is indicated, we'll order one with a specific clinical question to ensure you get the most useful scan.
Your Diagnosis and Treatment Plan
At the end of your appointment, Dr. Golan will sit down with you - not stand at the door - and walk through:
- A clear explanation of your diagnosis and what's causing your symptoms
- A treatment plan with specific steps, in the order we recommend them
- What to expect from each treatment - realistic timelines, what success looks like
- When to escalate if conservative care isn't working
- Answers to every question you have
We don't rush first appointments. If you need 40 minutes to understand your condition and feel confident in the plan, that's 40 minutes we'll spend.
Insurance and Payment
We accept most major insurance plans. Please contact our office before your visit to verify that your specific plan is in-network. For patients without insurance or with high deductibles, we offer transparent self-pay pricing and payment plan options.
Scheduling Your First Appointment
New patient appointments are available within days. Call (614) 328-5561 or schedule online. For Spanish-speaking patients, Dr. Golan and our staff are fully bilingual - no interpreter needed.
The most important thing I want a new patient to feel at their first appointment is heard. I'm going to ask about the history of your problem, what makes it better, what makes it worse, what you've already tried, and what your goals are. That context shapes everything. A patient who wants to run a marathon next spring needs a different conversation than a patient who just wants to walk without pain. Both are valid - but the plan is different. - Dr. Guy Golan, DPM
