What Does a Gout Attack Feel Like?

Diagnosis
The gold standard for gout diagnosis is joint aspiration (arthrocentesis) - withdrawing fluid from the affected joint with a small needle and examining it under polarized light microscopy for needle-shaped, negatively birefringent urate crystals. In practice, many cases are diagnosed clinically based on the characteristic presentation and elevated serum urate levels. Blood tests and imaging (X-ray, ultrasound, or dual-energy CT) support diagnosis and assessment of joint damage.
